Today is my final week as a Wolf Ambassador in Yellowstone National Park. I did actually get to see wolves in my time here, for all of you who didn't have faith I could find them (above is my photographic evidence). They are amazing animals that evoke strong feelings in people: love, hate, inspiration, fear, awe. Lucky for me all of the visitors I encountered in the Park loved the wolves - some to the point of near obsession. They are the rockstars of the animal world. People here pay thousands of dollars to follow them around. Part of me has been drawn into the hysteria. It can suck you in like gambling: one day you see nothing, so you figure the next day has to get better; it doesn't, so than you figure well something must be coming the next day - you're owed it for your time out; finally, you have an amazing day, your hooked and the cycle continues.
I never knew that I could have a job where the highlight would be watching animals mate and the greatest hazard would be frozen bison poop (for those of you who have never run over this on a cold day it is like running over a curb), but I did and it was good.
17 days and the next adventure begins!
